Random Thoughts (Post 2)

February 28, 2012

“…so many people live within unhappy circumstances and yet will not take the initiative to change their situation because they are conditioned to a life of security, conformity and conservatism, all of which may appear to give one peace of mind,…” – Chris McCandless, “Into The Wild”

What matters more than what you do with the time that is given you?  What is the reason behind why you spend that time the way you do?  “I spend all my time working so that my family can have a good life.”  What does that mean?  Does “good life” = more stuff?  Does “good life” mean living in a neighborhood where your kids aren’t afraid to go to school?  Is it necessary to make more money in order to give your family a good life, or could it be accomplished by spending less instead?  “I spend my time being entertained (video games, surfing the net, watching tv, playing golf…)”.  Why?  Is it because you work so hard and you need some down time?  (why are you working so hard? – see above)  Is it because your life sucks and you need an escape (see quote – Why does it suck?  Should you be working toward making it suck less)?  Here’s a question, do you even know what your ideal life would look like?  If you do know, what would it take to get closer to that ideal?  Winning the lotto is not a valid answer, unless the answer to the first question is having a life of zero responsibility and being able to spoil myself to the point of total self absorption (which eventually leads to being a total consumer/taker with no real friends and would most likely die in the face of any real crisis; and usually leads to deep depression and a hidden feeling of uselessness).

But I digress.  If we weren’t so dependent on the status quo, many of us could find fulfillment and be satisfied with our lives.  I don’t want to look back when I am 70 and feel like I did not live so much of my life.  I don’t want to feel like I spent the vast majority of it doing things I despised or resented and that my life was never my own.  No regrets man!  LIVE life.  In the words of Edna Mode, “I never look back darling, it distracts from the now.”
